iPhone 18 New Features: What Is Official Now and What Is Still Coming

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro models bring a variable-aperture camera, A20 Pro performance, longer battery life, a smaller Dynamic Island, and new AI features. The standard iPhone 18 is still expected later.

iPhone 18 New Features: What Is Official Now and What Is Still Coming
Updated September 26, 2026: Apple has released the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, so their headline upgrades are now confirmed. The standard iPhone 18 has not been announced yet and is currently expected in spring 2027. That distinction matters: many lists online mix official Pro features with unconfirmed expectations for the less expensive model.
The short version is that this generation focuses on camera control, sustained performance, battery life, and on-device intelligence rather than a dramatic exterior redesign. The Pro models are available now in the US, while buyers interested in the standard iPhone 18 should treat current specifications as reports rather than promises.

The biggest confirmed iPhone 18 Pro upgrades

These are the changes Apple has officially announced for the Pro models.

Variable-aperture camera

The 48MP Fusion Main camera can automatically or manually adjust its aperture for low light, portraits, and scenes that need more depth of field.

A20 Pro and improved cooling

A 2-nanometer A20 Pro chip works with a much larger vapor chamber to improve graphics, AI processing, and performance during longer demanding workloads.

Longer battery life

Apple rates the eSIM-only Pro Max for up to 45 hours of video playback, with faster wired charging across both Pro models.

1. A camera with real aperture control

The most distinctive hardware change is the variable aperture in the 48MP Fusion Main camera. Six internal blades let the phone choose among multiple aperture settings. A wider aperture can gather more light for darker scenes, while a narrower aperture can keep more of a group or landscape in focus.
Apple also adds manual Pro controls for aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and exposure monitoring. Photographic Styles now include texture and grain adjustments, and Cinematic effects can be applied after compatible video has already been recorded. For creators, this is a more meaningful upgrade than simply increasing the megapixel count.
A20 Pro is built on a 2-nanometer process and includes a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says memory bandwidth rises by 50 percent compared with A19 Pro, while the GPU can be up to 40 percent faster.
The chip package places memory beside the processor instead of directly in its thermal path. Combined with a vapor chamber that has three times the surface area of the previous design, the change is intended to reduce performance drops during gaming, video work, and on-device AI tasks.
Apple rates eSIM-only versions for up to 36 hours of video playback on iPhone 18 Pro and up to 45 hours on iPhone 18 Pro Max. Compatible wired charging can reach approximately 50 percent in 15 minutes. Real-world endurance will still depend on display brightness, signal strength, camera use, games, and background activity.
The Dynamic Island occupies less display space and can show as many as three Live Activities simultaneously. Face ID remains available on both Pro models. It is a refinement rather than a fully uninterrupted display, but it creates more room for status information.

Apple Reference Image adds a new authenticity tool

The iPhone 18 Pro camera sensor can create a signed reference image that records what the sensor captured. The Photos app can display that reference beside an edited result, helping photographers and viewers identify changes. Apple positions the feature as one part of a broader approach to image provenance in an era of AI editing.

5. Siri AI and iOS 27

The Pro models ship with iOS 27 and support Siri AI as it rolls out in beta. Apple says the assistant can use personal context across supported apps, understand what is visible on screen, and provide a camera-based mode for asking about objects in view. Availability can vary by language, region, and rollout stage, so buyers should confirm that a particular AI feature is live before making it the reason to upgrade.
The Pro lineup includes Apple's N1 networking chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, plus a C2 cellular modem with US mmWave support. The phones use an aluminum unibody with Ceramic Shield on the front and back. Color choices are black, silver, glacier, and burgundy.
In the US, iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299, both with 256GB of storage. Apple began general availability on September 18, 2026.
The base iPhone 18 is not official as of this article's publication date. Current reporting points to a spring 2027 introduction, potentially alongside iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air. Reported possibilities include an A20-family chip, more memory, a smaller Dynamic Island, and Apple's C2 modem. There are also reports that Apple could use a less ambitious display specification to control cost.
Until Apple announces the phone, its final design, cameras, display, storage, price, and release date can change. Buyers who want a non-Pro model should compare any new report with Apple's eventual product page rather than assuming Pro features will automatically carry over.

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone 18 available now?

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are available. The standard iPhone 18 has not been announced and is currently reported to be planned for spring 2027.
The 48MP Fusion Main camera now has a variable aperture. It can adjust light gathering and depth of field automatically, while Pro controls allow manual aperture selection.
Apple rates both Pro models for longer video playback, with the eSIM-only Pro Max reaching up to 45 hours. Actual results vary by usage and network conditions.
The strongest reasons are the variable-aperture camera, faster charging, longer battery life, and improved sustained performance. Owners satisfied with the iPhone 17 Pro display and camera may reasonably wait, especially if those specific improvements do not affect their daily use.
